The inhabitants of this miniature aquatic environment live for the benefit of each other in a continuous cycle. The combination of BioSand® Beads and BioSand® Liquid work to help keep the aquatic environment safe for fish by providing an excellent place for beneficial bacteria to live. The bacteria get their nourishment from the waste produced by the fish and plants.

Imagine the porous BioSand® Beads as miniature condominiums, where millions of bacteria live, grow and multiply. While every living thing needs a food source, it also becomes, or provides a food source for other organisms in the food chain. The bacteria thrive on waste given off by the fish and plants.

The plant benefits in this cycle by the food conversion, or waste produced by the bacteria. A healthy, growing plant produces vital oxygen for the fish through photosynthesis and it is processed through the fish's gills. The biological filtration process to remove the waste continues and the fish live happily as long as there is a food source and the temperature and the balance of their environment remains stable.

A maintenance diet of a very small amount of commercial fish food once or twice a week supplements the food source provided by the plant in addition to those that already exist in the water.
